What is Acne?

What is acne? Well to be honest the real word for this skin disease is called acne vulgaris. It is a skin disease that usually strikes people during puberty no matter what sex they are. The easiest way to understand the disease is this. There are small holes that are located on the skin and they connect to oil glands under the skin.

There are small canals that connect the glands to the holes. There is a liquid called Sebum which is an oily liquid that is produced by the glands. The liquid carries dead skin cells through the canals to the surface of the skin. Sometimes these canals also known as follicles get blocked. When these canals get blocked sometimes pimples grow out of these blocked follicles. This is acne.

There are several types of pimples that may occur three of the more common ones are; whiteheads which are closed oil glands, blackheads which are open oil glands that usually have a black tip, and pustules which are red, infected and sometimes have pus under them.

Sometimes these pimples could leave scars on the facial area or other parts of the body, but other then the scars there is not any other physical damage done to the skin. Sometimes it will affect people self esteem but as people grow older acne usually disappears or at least diminishes.
