Acne Effects More Than Your Skin

Acne can be devastating to those who suffer from it. Our face is the way that the world sees us. It is the part of us that people think of, and it can feel as though you are living underneath a mask. There is no affliction that causes more psychological and social harm than acne. The negative impact doesn' t have much to do with the severity of the actual acne experienced. What is the most important aspect is a person's perception of themselves when they have it.

Because of the nature of acne, it presents itself at a time when people are very vulnerable about the way they look and how others see them. It is most prevalent in adolescents and young adults with 85% of the afflicted being between the ages of 12 and 25. This causes very serious effects to an adolescents development. It has been found that patients with acne avoid eye contact often. Some children begin to hide themselves by growing out their hair. And very often, girls resort to wearing heavy makeup, even though they know that it can make outbreaks even worse.

There has been evidence that social phobias can even form with the onset of acne. Adolescents become so afraid of being appraised negatively by their peers that they become reclusive and shut in. Acne has also been linked to depression within this age group. Depression could present itself as withdrawal from social situations and impaired school performance.
